HALLUX VALGUS - (BUNIONS)

Hallux Valgus, also called bunions, is a very well known deformity of the big toe (see the picture) and is one of our more frequent problems.

Hallux Valgus could be congenital or could appear at adolescence, but it is more frequent in adult life.

Treatment

We must distinguish between the asymptomatic cases (they do not produce any type of pain) from those that causes us disorders.

What we consider as symptomatic Hallux Valgus:

  1. It causes pain in the bunion.

  2. It causes pain in other places of the feet like the metatarsals or the small toes.

  3. Hallux valgus itself, does not cause pain but totally deforms the rest of the toes that will cause us some discomfort.

  4. It does not allow the regular use of the shoes.

Like all the diseases of the feet we can make orthopaedics treatments (conservative ones or incruents-mirar en inglés) or surgical depending of the severity of the case.

Non surgical treatment of Hallux Valgus:

  1. Use of proper shoes that won’t deform the tip of the feet.

  2. Use of silicon orthesis and prosthesis to try to minimize the rubbing of the skin against the shoe.

  3. Use of orthopaedics insoles to correct deformities of the whole foot.

  We do not recommend:

  1. The use of night devices.
  2. ....

Surgical treatments

Open surgery

Treatments that will alter the main articulation of the big toe bringing it (arthroplastia or fixing it (artrodesi).

The artroplastia has been a procedure very used (still it is very used) and in experts hands it has given very good results. The inconvenients are the big reduction of the mobility.

  Percutaneous Surgery

Nowadays it is our favourite procedure because of the high index of satisfaction between our patients. See Percutaneous surgery.
